We keep track of all the "Best of" lists from a few years back. That way award-winning cars drop into our price range.
Here are three lists of note:
• From Cars.com, a Top 10 for $10,000 list. Looking only at cars from 02 or newer, their editors cast votes for the 05 Ford Focus, 03 Ford Taurus, 03 Mazda Protege, 03 Mercury Sable, 02 Buick LeSabre, 02 Chevrolet Impala, 02 Ford Windstar, 02 Honda Accord, 02 Honda Civic, and the 02 Oldsmobile Aurora. You can see their full report here.
• From AOL Autos, a list of "best bets" in used cars and trucks. Editors there cited the 97-02 Honda Civic, 97-02 Camry, 97-02 Ford Crown Victoria, 97-02 Lexus ES300,97-02 Mazda Miata, 97-02 Honda CR-V, 99-02 Nissan Pathfinder, 99-02 Honda Odyssey, 98-03 Toyota Tacoma and the 97-02 Ford F-150. You can find more about their choices here.
• And from Yahoo Autos, this is the list of best and worst used cars from Consumer Reports. The list is more than a year old but that's not a problem because it just means the cars rated highly have just gotten cheaper with time.
Among the more affordable vehicles on the Consumer Reports Good Bets list are two Fords, the Escort and the Mustang; two Mazdas, the Miata and the Protege; the Misubishi Galant, the Pontiac Vibe and the Subaru Forester.
The list for vehicles with above average reports of problems included the BMW7 Series, the GMC Envoy, the Lincoln Navigator, the Saturn Vue and the Volkswagen New Beetle.

So respected is the Motor Trend Car of the Year, we looked back in time to see if any winners had dropped into our $10K-$12K price range.
The 06 and 07 winners, the Civic and the Camry, are two of the world's most popular cars and they hold their resale value extremely well. To find either of those cars in the $10,000 range, expect them to be more than five years old.
Two winners of note are from 00 (the Lincoln LS, which shares a platform with a Jaguar and which has shown only minimal reliability problems) and from 01, the Chrysler PT Cruiser. You can find Cruisers all the way up to 04 that are still in the $10,000 range, and their reliability over time has been better than expected.
